Maine Coons are lovable, intelligent, and very sociable creatures that make excellent pets for any household. But how long do they live? They have an average life expectancy that ranges from 12-16 years, they can also live up to 20 years, which is much longer than other breeds.

Many different factors can affect the life expectancy of a Maine Coon Cat. Factors such as genetics, diet, and environment all play an important role in how long they live. There are many things we do keep our furry friend happy and healthy longer! We thrive to keep them happy and healthy as they age.

We provide them with all of their first round of shots, nutritious meals, and give them lots of toys that they can play with or chase around the house.  They spend hours chasing a toy around, and they love to have fun. We allow them to stay longer with their mother and provide them with as many toys as possible. This will allow them to explore and play on their terms.

Food!

Cat food

Cat food is just one of the many tasks that may need to be taken care of if you happen to own a maine coon cat. This also can be a problem if you have an active cat who needs to maintain their weight. The best food for Maine Coon cats is high-quality wet and dry food. Maine Coon kittens should be fed at least 3 to 4 times a day, especially while they are between 4 and 8 months old. And then feed them twice a day when they reach the age of 1 year. Adult cats should be fed once to twice a day.

  1. People Food: Maine Coons love human food as well! You can’t keep your pet away from your plate with a closed door – they will find the way in and sneak some of your snacks!

  2. Catnip: They are also known to enjoy catnip, which can cause them to act weirdly, but it is considered safe for the animal.

Are Maine Coons picky eaters?

Maine coons are not picky eaters. They are not picky about food and will eat just about anything they can get their paws on. However, it’s possible that some of maine coon cats are picky eaters because they have a high prey drive which means they enjoy hunting for their food. They might not be interested in eating anything else if there is something more interesting around.

Do Maine Coons drink a lot of water?

Maine coon cats naturally drink a lot of water. You should always keep a clean and fresh source available at all times!

However, this does not mean that they should never get any fluid intake. Maine coons can still get water from their food, even if it’s just in the form of diluted juices. For example, you could offer them wet food like canned cat food or wet kibble.

Can Maine Coons drink milk?

Your Maine Coon cat may enjoy milk as a treat, but as a general rule it isn’t good for them. The lactose in milk can cause many digestive issues for cats, including upset stomachs.

Should I feed my Maine Coon raw food?

Maine Coon cats need to eat foods with a high protein content. A raw food diet is beneficial for their digestive systems, which can’t handle traditional cat food’s preservatives.

There are a lot of debates about whether this type of food is healthy for the cat. Some veterinarians say that this type of diet can lead to kidney problems. But, others argue that it is a healthier alternative to commercially available foods. In any case, it is best to consult with your veterinarian before making any changes in your cat’s diet.

Why do Maine Coons cover their food?

Maine Coons cover their food because they are trying to eat it. Maine Coons are intelligent animals that like to keep their food fresh. They cover their food to keep it away from other animals, insects or rain. They are doing this because they do not want other cats to steal their food.

Do Maine Coons play with their food?

Maine coons are known for being curious and playful animals. They have been found to be one the most intelligent breed of cats.  However, they are not always the most tidy of animals and will often play with their food before they eat it. Some people claim that Maine coons do indeed play with their food while others say it’s just a general behavior that can be seen in many animals.

You should look into the different cases of messy eating, some are because Maine Coons gobble their food down too quickly, but in other cases it’s actually playing with its food. You can stop this behavior in some instances by only giving cats a little bit of food at a time and coaxing them to not play with it.

In 2019, I started thinking about adding a cat to the family. I did a lot of research on the cat I wanted and what might fit best with my family. When I was finally ready to start looking to bring a car home, Covid hit and the shelters wouldn’t let me go in to meet any of the cats in person. I pretty much gave up. Towards the end of 2021 I stumbled across Debra‘s website. I asked if it would be OK if my daughter and I could come over to meet the litter of kittens she recently had. We stayed for less than an hour and by the end of the visit, one little guy had fallen asleep in my daughters lap. He chose her. That Christmas Augustus joined our family. Debra was so kind during the waiting period, allowing me to visit multiple times so our little Augustus could get to know us before he came home with us. I would text her multiple times during the week and she was always so generous in the depth of her responses. Being a first time cat owner I was really nervous and she answered all of them...
